Fresh concerns have been expressed that the separation the country’s main airports could spell privatisation for Shannon, leaving the Mid-West’s main economic asset at the mercy of profiteers.
That’s the view of Fianna Fail Transport Spokesperson Timmy Dooley who’s calling on all Oireachtas representatives in the region to state their position on the future of Shannon, including possible privatisation or leasing.
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has appointed consultants to review the situation but Deputy Dooley fears a sell off or lease would see a private airport offering routes only for profit – and not for the strategic development of the local economy.
He believes that together, local representatives can avoid this situation
