Developers behind controversial proposals to construct a 34 million euro retail development in Ennis find out later if their project can get off the ground.
Local town councillors meet this evening to vote on proposed changes to the Ennis &Environs plan, which if passed could pave the way for the major shopping unit.
However traders in the town centre are staunchly opposed to the project which their fear will decimate business.
Michael Lynch Ltd are proposing to build a major retail unit with Tesco as the main tenant along with offices and a public Library for the town on a site opposite St. Flannan’s College on the Clare Road.
The site is currently used for a range of purposes including residential, and employment and if any major development was to proceed in the area – it would require changes to the Ennis Development Plan.
In July it was proposed the plan would be modified to include the text that the area would be a suitable site for a "district centre scheme" or "new large foodstore" – thus paving the way for the Tesco- however Ennis Traders fear that if it gets the green light it will move business and jobs out of the town centre .
The town council’s received 45 submissions concerning the issue and this evening elected members will consider these, the town managers report and all other relevant documents.
Members of Clare County Council will also vote on the matter at their meeting next week but following an agreement in 2007- its believed that decisions regarding certain planning matters in Ennis- remain the reserve of the local council.
