In a UK radio documentary on the origins of the song, front man for the Pogues- Shane McGowan said the original plan was to set it here in the banner county.
They said early demos told the story of a sailor from west Clare gazing out at the Atlantic and dreaming of what life would be like across the ocean in New York.
