Ennis could be the location for a major conference on suicide in the near future following concerns that the town is being "torn apart" by tragic deaths in the recession.
As recent figures point to a rise in deaths by suicide in Clare last year, Ennis Councillors have expressed support for a training programme for frontline local authority staff to encourage more people to talk about the problem and prevent further loss of life.
The issue was raised by Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard who told this months Council meeting that while 15 people have lost their lives on Ireland’s roads so far this year, 30 people had died by sucide in the first 10 days of 2012.
She’s hoping to organise a conference on the subject in Ennis and feels participation in the HSE’s Safe Talk programme is an important first step.
