Gardaí deny excessive force at China protest

Ennistymon Gardaí  have denied they acted in a heavy handed manner in dealing with a protester at The Cliffs of Moher ahead of the visit of the Chinese Vice President.

"Free Tibet" campaigner Sinead Ni Garvey claimed officers used excessive force to remove her from the North Clare Attraction shortly before the arrival of Xi Jinping.

She alleged four gardaí  approached her – snapped her protest sign in two and then twisted her arm behind her back to remove her from the area.

However Speaking to Clare FM – Ennistymon Superintendent Colm O’Sullivan denied there was any heavy handed behaviour by gardaí  and added that officers were acting in accordance to legislation to prevent disruption at events such as the visit of Mr Xi Jinping.

Superintendent O’Sullivan added that if Ms Ni Garvey feels that she feels aggrieved by her removal by officers there’s an avenue open to her to contact the Garda Ombudsman Complaint Commission.
