College grant applications now centralised

Applications for new college grants can no longer be made locally in Clare.

Thousands of students heading for third level education must apply for grant funding form a new centralised office in Dublin  – Student Universal Support Ireland – from May onwards for the college year starting in September.

The move sees an end to new grant applications to Clare VEC and Clare County Council, though both local authorities will continue to administer grants for existing third level and post-graduate students until their continuing studies are complete.

Local representatives have expressed disappointment at the loss of the local service for college students, and East Clare Councillor Joe Cooney feels its the wrong move.
