Mayor Kilkee insists Che do Bheatha festival will continue despite Ganley comments

The Mayor of Kilkee says people in the town will continue to celebrate a festival inspired by Che Guevara, even though he has been branded as a ‘mass-murder’ and ‘psychotic’.

The comments came from Libertas founder Declan Ganley, who was criticising Galway City Council for their plans to erect a statue in honour of the iconic revolutionary – Mr. Ganley claims this will ‘cast a shadow’ on Ireland’s reputation internationally.

Despite this, plans are underway for the ‘Che do Bheatha’ festival to be held in Kilkee again this September, marking the anniversary of a stopover by Che Guevara in the town in 1961.

The town’s mayor Councillor Elaine Haugh Hayes says it is not intended to be a political event.
