21 percent of Clare houses unoccupied

 

New official statistics show over a fifth of Clare’s housing stock lies vacant.

A breakdown of the county’s figures in Census 2011 reveal the impact the housing boom and subsequent collapse had in the county  with a total of 11,782 dwellings recorded as vacant here on census night – giving the county a vacancy rate of 21 percent.

The statistics also show a population growth of 5 percent during the five years , women outnumber men and the number of couples separated or divorced in Clare stands at over 4 percent.

A breakdown of the county’s figures from the 2011 Census figures  reveal a moderate hike of 5,765 in the 5 years from 2006 to last year – a rise of 5 and a half per cent – to a total of 111,336 people living in the county

The breakdown of the census figures also reveals there were 600 more women in the banner county than men – 58,898 females outnumbering 58,298 males.

Last year those aged over 65 numbered over 14,500 – with 1,581 of these aged over 85 years –  twice as many women as men

In 2011 there were 46,241 married couples compared to over 60 thousand single people, while the CSO also documented over 2,000 people divorced, over 5 thousand widowed and over 2,800 separated.
