Vote due on proposed rezoning of Stonehall land

Clare County Councillors will today make a decision on the proposed rezoning of land near Shannon Airport, in order to facilitate a planned large renewable energy development.

The land, at Stonehall near Newmarket on Fergus, is earmarked for the construction of an 85 million euro plant by Carbon Sole Industries, who say their plans could create up to 50 direct jobs as well as attracting other spin-off companies to Shannon.

If today’s vote is carried, the development would still require further planning permission, and local residents have voiced strong oppositions

Local representatives in the Shannon Electoral Area are divided on the proposal, but today’s vote will be put to all 32 members of the local authority.

It forms part of the Shannon Town and Environs Local Area Plan, which requires the backing of the full Council.

Newmarket on Fergus Councillor Pat McMahon says while people are supportive of the planned development, there are question marks about the proposed location.
