Burton may row back on lone parent cuts

The Social Protection Minister has indicated that she may row back on the Government’s plans to stop lone parent payments when the youngest child reaches the age of seven.

Speaking during a Dáil debate on the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill last night, Joan Burton said she believes stopping this payment when the youngest child is seven, may be too young, unless there is adequate childcare.

Minister Burton also said she WON’T proceed with the measure – unless she receives a commitment in the next Budget on affordable childcare.
