The Minister for the Environment has been accused of ‘making a shambles’ of the implementation of the Household Charge by a member of Clare County Council.
Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn’s comments follow a discussion about the charge at this week’s meeting of the local authority, which heard that the Household Charge Bureau was still unable to provide details about the number of Clare homes which had paid the 100 euro tax.
Nationally, an estimate half of eligible homeowners have registered to pay the charge, but local authorities have been warned that their funding could be cut as a result of high levels of non-compliance.
