Merkel expresses alarm over the rise of French far right

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called the rise of the French far right ‘alarming’.

Marine Le Pen – who heads the right wing National Front, took 18 per cent of the vote in the first round of the French Presidential election yesterday.

Incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy was narrowly beaten by Socialist candidate François Hollande – and the two will now go head to head in the second round in two weeks’ time.
