Ballynacally father speaks of dog attack on his young daughter

The Clare toddler who needed up to 60 stitches after being attacked by a dog at a relatives home is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon when Abi O’Donoghue and her family were attending her cousin’s 21st birthday party in Ballynacally.

The little girl was playing in the garden when the family’s Siberian Husky launched an unprovoked attack on the child,

Relatives managed to pull the animal off her, but not before it seriously injured her.

Abby was rushed to Ennis General Hospital, before being transferred to University Hospital Galway where she underwent surgery yesterday.

Speaking to Clare FM’s Morning Focus Abi’s father Cathal O’Donoghue said "She has lacerations to the back of her hands, the back of her ears, teeth marks, and underneath her left arm got a bite" he said.

""The plastic surgeons operated on her yesterday, she was 2 hours on the operating table".

"She had up to 60 stitches in the back of her head, under her arm and behind her ear" he added.

The dog has since been destroyed by Clare Animal Warden Frankie Coote – He’s urging people to be mindful of young children if they are large dogs or certain types of breeds in the vicinity.
