Clare Schools lose appeal over teacher cuts

There’s deep disappointment in North Clare as efforts by two local schools to retain their existing teacher numbers have been unsuccessful.

A total of 72 small schools including Boston National School and Scoil Naisiunta Eoín Baiste in Ballyvaughan, set to lose a teacher in September, had applied to the Department of Eduction to retain their current staffing levels.

While almost half the appeals were successful, 38 schools including the two in North Clare failed to have the cuts overturned.

Clare INTO representative and Mullagh National School principal Sean McMahon has been appointed to a task force set up by the organisation which aims to combat cuts to small schools.

He feels communities, schools and other groups must come together in order to make a strong presentation to the department
