Pressure increases on Cardinal Brady

Pressure is growing on Cardinal Sean Brady to resign his position as head of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

Senior political figures have expressed their concern over Cardinal Brady’s handling of abuse allegations against Father Brendan Smyth in the 1970s.

Yesterday, the Tánaiste  Eamon Gilmore said it was his own personal view that the Cardinal should step down – and the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn said he was uncomfortable with Cardinal Brady being the patron of the majority of state schools.

However, Irish Times Rome Correspondent Paddy Agnew says the Vatican is unlikely to bow to this type of pressure.
