Taoiseach Enda Kenny visits County Clare today for a highly poignant trip to Loop Head lighthouse.
Enda Kenny’s grandfather James McGinley was a former keeper at the lighthouse, which has it’s origins dating back to the 1670s.

The current building was erected in 1854, and became automated in 1991 – however, last summer it became a key tourist attraction in West Clare, during a trial opening which attracted 17,000 visitors and generated 400,000 euro for the local economy.
The lighthouse will re-open for visitors again this summer, and West Clare Councillor Gabriel Keating says it’s already proving to be popular once more in 2012.
