New survey shows decline in Irish literacy standards

School teachers are questioning the accuracy of an OECD study – which indicated that standards of numeracy and literacy are dropping in Ireland.

The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, claimed that Ireland’s literacy standards had dropped from being fifth in the world down to seventeenth.

However a Red C poll out today on behalf of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network showed that a third of parents think standards of education have improved in the last five years.

A further 37 per cent of parents think standards have remained the same.

Larry Fleming, former president of the IPPN, says the poll results show that parents don’t buy into criticism of Irish school standards.
