Government denies exerting pressure over controversial ESRI report

The Taoiseach has rejected suggestions that the government may have put pressure on the ESRI to withdraw a report, claiming that 44 per cent of working families would be better off on the dole.

Enda Kenny says the ESRI is an independent organisation – and he would not stand over any attempt by the government to have the report withdrawn.

The think tank last night withdrew the study on the costs associated with going to work – claiming it had concerns about the findings.

But the report’s author Richard Tol is standing over it.
