Appeal Court to review Clare mens’ sentencing

The family of Lissycasey man Brian Casey could find out in the next  week if his killers will have their jail terms extended.

Harry Dinan, of Waterpark Heights, Ennis and his nephew Kevin Dinan of Clarehill, Clarecastle were jailed for five and four years respectively for killing the young school teacher at O’Connell Square, Ennis on St. Stephen’s night 2009.

The DPP challenged the sentences and last December The Court of Criminal Appeal ruled the jail terms handed down were insufficient.

Mr. Justice Liam McKechnie described the attack on Mr. Casey as cowardly and reprehensible and the count found and that the sentencing judge had made a mistake in twice, giving the Dinans credit for the  fact this was a ‘one punch’ type case and thus reducing their sentences.

The case is included in the Appeals Court list for Thursday and will be called over for a full hearing next Monday – today week.
