Farmers call for Carbon Tax to be scrapped

Clare farmers are calling on the government to suspend the carbon tax which is costing the industry millions a year, and claim the effect on the exchequer would be minimal.

The carbon tax amounts to around 6c on each litre of fuel, and the ICSA says this means it will cost the farming community 32 million euro this year.

However, as fuel prices rise and as farmers continue to feel the effects of recent heavy rain, the coalition is now facing calls to suspend the charge in order to alleviate pressure on businesses.

ICSA General Secretary and Cratloe farmer Eddie Punch feels such a move could actually benefit the state coffers
