It’s understood many of those killed were hit by falling trees or electrocuted amid torrential rain and winds gusting up to 100 miles per hour overnight.

Heavy snow is now being reported in parts of West Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina as Sandy merges with a descending cold front from Canada.

Meanwhile, superstorm Sandy is causing travel disruption in the areas affected, with a knock-on effect being experienced at Shannon Airport.

Flights from Newark and JFK Airports, due to arrive this morning by United and Aer Lingus today, while British Airways has also cancelled it’s planned morning service from London to New York, which stops at Shannon.

A scheduled United Airlines service from Shannon to Newark this morning has also been cancelled while passengers heading to other destinations in North America are likely to experience delays.

Intending passengers are advised to contact their airlines.
