Slight fall in HSE deficit

New figures from the HSE are expected to reveal a slight fall in the health service deficit this year – but it’s still 394 million euro in the red.

The Irish Times says the HSE’s performance report – due to be published later – will show a 10 million euro reduction in the deficit figure for August.

It comes as an ESRI report out today shows that despite dwindling resources, hospitals are managing to treat more and more patients- due to a higher level of discharging.

ESRI Professor Miriam Wiley says it’s an impressive reflection on the acute hospital system, in times of budgetary constraints.
