Almost 15 hundred Clare students still awaiting college grants

The government has been told that it is ‘unacceptable’ that Clare students face a wait to the end of the year to have their grants paid, when many are in need of urgent assistance.

Figures released by the Education Minister show that 80% of eligible students in the county have yet to receive a reply on their grant applications, amounting to almost 1500 people.

The Chief Executive of Student Universal Support Ireland or SUSI, a new centralized body established to process grant applications, insists it’s working, while the Taoiseach says the hiring of extra workers should see all students paid by the end of next month.

Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley says many students require help much sooner than that.
