Fianna Fail’s Transport spokesperson and Clare TD Timmy Dooley is calling for swift government action to ensure the future viability of CIE.
Yesterday it was announced that the price of bus and rail tickets will increase from December with the hikes being blamed on CIE’s poor financial situation and falling passenger numbers.
The public transport company’s annual report for last year shows a deficit of 6.1 million euro, and a drop in revenue by 3.4 million.
While C.I.E did reduce its operating costs by 23 million euro, auditors Price Waterhouse Cooper did warn of question marks over the company’s ability to survive.
Clare TD Timmy Dooley, his party’s Transport spokesperson, says raising fares to address falling revenues could cost more in the long run.
