Halappanaver family want public inquiry into her death

Savita Halappanavar’s husband is calling for the removal of some of the members of the HSE inquiry team set up to review his wife’s death.

In an interview in today’s Irish Times Praveen Halappanavar said three Galway doctors should be removed from the  inquiry team- however, the head of the review team has said its important to have representatives of the hospital on the panel so they can compare guidelines.

Meanwhile Cabinet Ministers will discuss their response to a Sinn Fein motion calling for the introduction of abortion legislation this morning.

The Government is under pressure to outline a time frame for when it intends to provide legal clarity to doctors around the issue of medical abortions.

In a separate development – Last night Catholic Bishops provided some clarity on their views on the issue.

They’ve agreed that medical treatment on a seriously ill pregnant woman
which may endanger the foetus is ethically permissible – provided every effort is made to save both lives.
