North and West MEP Marian Harkin is demanding a moratorium be imposed on all shale gas extraction – which is also known as fracking.
She says EU states should ban fracking until environmental protection laws are fully in place, or risk environmental damage.

MEPs this week voted in Parliament for robust regulatory regimes governing fracking- it comes amid concerns over possible fracking parts of Ireland including in the Clare basin
They’re calling for EU member states to be "cautious" about permitting exploitation of unconventional fossil fuels, pending further analysis of whether EU-level regulation is appropriate.
