Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton said President Michael D Higgins’ remarks on the Savita Halappanavar case were "considerate, thoughtful, reflective and humane".
She was speaking in the Dáil after Fianna Fail’s Billy Kellegher said that not even the president had confidence in the HSE inquiry.

Mr Higgins said the inquiry must meet the needs of the family as well as those of the state and that it must ensure women get the medical services they’re entitled to during pregnancy.
