Trade Unions warn over Shannon Airport Separation Plans

Trade union officials who represent staff at Shannon Airport are warning industrial action will be inevitable over the government’s plans for separation, unless the proposals secure the future for workers.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar will today reveal in full – proposals to separate Clare’s International Airport from the DAA and develop it into an international centre for aviation industry services – with the promise of 3000 new jobs.

Additional routes are also expected in the aftermath of today’s announcement by a number of airlines, including Ryanair.

Over 250 people currently work at Shannon Airport – and unions say they’re concerned the airport will no longer be viable under this new plan.

Aviation organiser with SIPTU Tony Carroll is calling on the Government to keep the Shannon staff in the employment of the DAA.

However The Transport Minister insists that doing nothing is not an option for Shannon while local Government TD’s have hailed today’s announcement as a new beginning for the region.

Clare Fine Gael TD Pat Breen is confident that the announcement will serve as a positive boost for Clare.
