Figures are also high at university Hospital Galway, where there are 14 people in the queue, and in Limerick Regional which sees 23 people stuck on trolleys and chairs.

Earlier, management at Dooradoyle announced a complete visitor ban at the region’s main hospital due to an outbreak of the Winter Vomiting Bug.

The HSE is also urging potential patients to seek advice from their local GP before attending the hospital’s emergency department.
