Court To Rule On Garlic Importation Tax

A Dublin businessman will find out today if his 6 years jail sentence for a 1.6 million euros tax scam on garlic will be reduced on appeal.

Paul Begley of fruit and vegetable importers Begley Brothers Ltd in Blanchardstown has challenged the severity of the punishment imposed for evading customs duty.

He falsified paperwork to avoid higher duties importers pay on garlic.

The businessman was caught out in 2007 when customs officers at Dublin Port discovered a container of garlic wrongly labelled as apples.

A decision on whether the sentence should be shortened is due later this morning.
