Garda Investigation into horse meat find

The Minister for Agriculture will brief an Oireachtas committee on the horse meat scandal later today, after last night asking the Gardaí to help in the investigation.

Rangeland Foods in Co. Monaghan joined the controversy after 75 percent horse DNA was found in a sample of one of the raw materials used in making its burgers.

The supplier provides burgers to Supermacs, but company boss Pat McDonagh says they’ve carried out tests on the fast food chain’s burgers and found they are 100 percent Irish beef and fully traceable.

A UK agency has also found 80 percent horse DNA in samples taken at the cold meat store Freeza Meats in Newry.

Pat O’Keeffe, deputy editor of the Irish Farmer’s Journal, says the detection of horse DNA at the Newry plant is significant and this investigation is closing in on one supplier:
