Two Kilrush brothers jailed over assault

Two Kilrush brothers have been jailed for three years for the assault of local man in a row over a money debt.

24 year old Daniel O’Brien and 31 year old Martin O’Brien pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Kilrush Man Eoin Hayes almost two years ago.

Ennis Circuit Court was told the victim in this case – Eoin Hayes received a text message from Daniel O’Brien telling him he owed him money on March 1st, 2011.

Mr Hayes went to the appartment where Mr. O’Brien was residing at the time – in Place de Plouzane, Kilrush to tell him he didn’t owe him money, when the assault took place.

During the attack, the court was told that Daniel O’Brien stabbed Mr. Hayes twice, while his brother Martin O’Brien also took part, hitting Eoin Hayes four to five times with a Golf Club until the club broke.

The O’Brien brothers pleaded Guilty to the charges and in court last evening, Judge Gerald Keys sentenced them both to 3 years in prison.

He suspended 18 months of the sentence handed down to Martin O’Brien of The Bungalow, Wood Road, Kilrush and 14 months of the term given to Daniel O’Brien, with an address at the Square, Kilrush who was already serving a jail term for a previous offence.
