Slight drop in Mid West dole queues

There’s been a slight drop in Ireland’s dole queues.

New figures for last month show 2,200 fewer people claiming benefits, leaving the standardised unemployment rate at 14% – unchanged from February.

In the Mid-West, the number of people signing on fell by 340 in the last month, and is now nearly 1,300 lower than this time last year.

Full figures for Clare will be released tomorrow.

Despite the drop in dole queues – the rate of unemployment remains unchanged.

Chief Economist at KBC Bank, Austin Hughes says it’s likely to remain high in the years ahead – but there are signs of progress.
