There was a 23 per cent increase in the number of new mortgages approved in April – compared to the previous month.
New figures from the Irish Banking Federation reveal that a total of 1,433 mortgages – to a value of 240 million euro – were approved by lenders here during the month of April.

The vast majority – 91 per cent – of approvals were for house purchases.
The average mortgage approval value for the purposes of buying a house was 167,418 euro – up 2.2 per cent on the same period last year.
