Inquest hears hospital unable to locate Ennis man’s body

A distressed Ennis widow has told an inquest into her husband’s death that hospital staff didn’t know where his remains were after his organs were removed for donation.

65 year old Joseph Connery from Dalcassian Park died three days after sustaining head injuries after falling down the stairs at his home last Saint Stephen’s night.

The father of four was a life long donor card holder and staff at Limerick Regional hospital informed his family organ removal would take about 10 hours and they would be contacted once it was complete.

However at Limerick Coroners court yesterday the retired coal man’s wife Mary said nobody contacted them and when they rang the hospital the following day there was confusion as to where his body was.

He was subsequently located in the morgue – over 22 hours after the family had originally left the hospital and
Coroner, Dr Timothy Casey told the family to raise their concerns with hospital management.

Speaking after the inquest Mary Connery and her daughter Trina says it was a very traumatic experience.
