Deirdre McCarthy was reported missing by her family in March 2011 – following a three day search her remains were found washed up on Fanore beach.

During his trial Colm Deely admitted strangling the 43 year old guesthouse worker whom he had known for 20 years saying he was sorry about what happened though he denied the charge of murder

He explained the two had been together in her bedroom and began to row about a loan he had given her – Colm Deeley added that Deirdre McCarthy said she would tell his wife about them and he wouldn’t see his boys again.

He said he lost control and placed his hands around her neck but didn’t mean to – before later putting her body over the wall somewhere on the road to Fanore.

This evening the jury of seven women and five men found him guilty of murder by unanimous verdict after almost three hours of deliberation.

Mr Justice Barry White remanded Colm Deely in custody and will sentence him to the madatory term of  life imprisonment tomorrow morning.
