Despite massive HSE overspends Ennis General within budget

New figures show the county hospital is bucking the trend of overspends within the health service, by staying within it’s budget.

While the HSE projects a year end deficit of nearly 104 million euro, with the biggest overruns in hospitals, Ennis General has stayed within it’s allotted amount so far this year.

The latest monthly performance report also shows that while some progress is being made on waiting times in the Mid West, a long road remains to ensure promises regarding orthopaedic care are kept.

Newly-released HSE figures show that Ireland’s hospitals had collectively overspent their budgets by 75 million euro in the first five months of the year.

The region’s main facility, University Hospital Limerick is the worst offender, having exceeded it’s allocation by 3.1 million.

At Ennis General, however, accounts are in the black with spending nearly 250,000 euro under budget.

Waiting lists are also reducing across the local health system, though progress is still required.

In Ennis, 304 patients have waited over four years for a consultants appointment, with nearly 600 in the same position for Dooradoyle and long queues also remain at the Mid West’s Orthopaedic hospital in Croom.

While progress has been made, 2,600 people have been waiting at least a year to see a consultant there, six months before the HSE’s self-imposed deadline to reduce that figure to zero.
