Constitutional Convention Recommends Election Change

Clare voters could soon see radical changes to how they vote in general elections.

The Constitutional Convention has advised the government to change Ireland’s election laws to allow for bigger constituencies, each with at least 5 TDs.

The convention says expanding constituencies will make it less difficult for smaller parties to be represented in the Dail.

However, as it is 65 years since the county last had 5 Dail representatives, such a change would likely see the Clare constituency expanded beyond the county boundary.

The Convention also recommends allowing greater access to postal voting, and that non-TDs should be allowed to become ministers.
