Fears Shannon Could Have Suffered Devestating Explosion

It’s claimed the town of Shannon could have been blown sky high during the recent removal of unstable explosives from the Smithstown Industrial Estate.

Local respresentatives have slammed agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency for keeping them in the drak on what explosives were being kept at the Enva facility, as they questioned Council officials at a meeting last evening.

It’s emerged the Chief Fire Officer was aware of the presence of the explosive chemicals since October 25th, and brought the matter to the attention of the County Manager who explained he didn’t inform the public following advice from Gardai to avoid creating a sense of panic.

Shannon Councillor Patricia McCarthy says local residents feared for their safety and thought the area could have been "blown to smithereens".
