Clampdown On Illegal Use Of Free Travel Passes

Iarnród Éireann is warning of an ongoing clampdown on the illegal use of Free Travel Passes after an inspection blitz on rail passengers including those using the Ennis to Limerick line.

Irish Rail and Department of Social Protection say they found widespread fraud in the use of passes last week with many holders travelling on out of date passes and others using free travel documents issued to somebody else.

Passes being used fraudulently were confiscated, while offending passengers were forced to pay their fares and given  fines of up to 100 euro.

Jane Cregan of Iarnrod Eireann told Clare FM that more inspections are planned.
