Inquest Into 2 Year Olds Death Finds Ambulance Control Fault

A HSE report into the death of a 2 year old boy in Middleton in Co Cork in May has found that Ambulance control personnel did not follow the correct procedure on receipt of a 999 call for an ambulance.

This meant the child’s condition was not correctly assessed.

Vakaris Martinitis died from injuries sustained after he fell from an upstairs window at his home.

An ambulance which was due to be dispatched was stood down because the controller believed the fall to be a minor one.

A HSE report into the incident launched today makes 12 recommendations including a change in procedures to allow greater priority to be given to cases where there is limited information available.

The HSE also recommends the call taker should ensure as much information as possible is gathered from witnesses at the scene.
