Tuam Archbishop To Support Government

The Archbishop of Tuam has called on the Bon Secours Sisters to 'act upon their responsibilities' following the discovery of 800 childrens' remains in a former septic tank beside a former Mother and Baby Home in Galway.

Dr Michael Neary says it's in the 'interest of the common good' that the order does so.

He issued a statement last night hours after the government said it would set up an initiative across a number of departments, forming the basis of an inquiry.

The bishop says material which the Bon Secours Sisters held, as managers of the Mother and Baby Home, was handed over to Galway County Council and health authorities in 1961.
