Announcement Expected on Kilrush Mother and Baby Home

The government is expected to make an announcement this month on whether a former mother and baby home in Kilrush will be examined by a Commission of Inquiry into the issue.

The home operated in the 1920s and 1930s, and was located near the current Kilrush Community Hospital.

The Children's Minister has already announced the inquiry in light of reports about the Bon Secours home in Tuam – where it’s thought almost 800 infants and young children died.

Charlie Flanagan has said it will cover more than just the Tuam facility, though his Department has told Clare FM that no definitive list of mother and baby homes has been drawn up.

Paddy Waldron of the Kilrush Historical Society has been quoting from a 1927 report, which outlined the conditions at the home there.
