Taoiseach Rules Out Compensation In Medical Card Review Cases

People campaignning for the return of discretionary medical cards in Clare say they're relieved at the government's U-turn on the issue.

However the coalition's being critiscised for the level of stress caused by reviews which removed the supports from people with long term illnesses and disabilities.

Calls are now being made for the government to pay compensation to those affected.

After several months of campigning Clare parents say they're delighted at the return of their children's medical cards.

Children here are amongst thousands of people who had their discretionary supports removed by a cabinet approved review of the system by the HSE.

One mother Catherine Pender brought her case to the office of the Ombudsman.

She got word just hours before the government's u-turn that her son Rory who has cerbral palsey would get his card back.

While Clonlara woman Noreen Keane is one of those credited with starting the campaign back in September of 2013.

Her son Ronan has Down Syndrome. They had recently secured a GP Visit Card and Long Term Illness book – however this didn't cover several other treatments he requires.

They along with many other families across the country are expecting to receive a full medical card within the next three weeks.

And Noreen says she hopes the Government will refund the expenses people have been forced to pay due to the review.

However speaking a short time ago the Taoiseach has signalled there will be no re-imbursement of money.

He faced a a barrage of questions again in the Dáil following the yesterday's decision however Enda Kenny would not bow to calls for such money to be refunded.
