EU Survey Finds Irish Don’t Feel Safe in Hospitals

Just over half of people in Ireland feel that hospitals are dangerous places where they could be harmed by the care they receive.

That's according to a survey on patient safety carried out across the European Union.

This latest Eurobarometer study says 54 per cent of people questioned in Ireland felt it was likely they could be harmed by the care they receive in hospitals.

25 per cent reported that they or a family member had an 'adverse event' like something going wrong with their care while in hospital.

That's slightly below the European average of 27 per cent.

Some of the priorities for Irish people when measuring the quality of healthcare include short waiting lists, cleanliness and how near they are to a hospital or doctor.

Despite the concerns however, 62 per cent still feel Ireland has 'good' quality healthcare – that's a jump of 9 per cent on similar research from 2009.
