Concerns Raised Over SNA Allocations for Clare

The Special Needs Parents Association says there's fear amongst its members in Clare about the impact of a reduction in SNA allocations.

Across the country 260 extra posts will come on stream at Primary and Secondary Schools from September, but there will be a fall of around 3 in the number of positions in Clare.

IMPACT says Clare parents are facing into a summer of uncertainty after what it feels is an eleventh hour announcement of special needs assistant allocations for schools.

Approximately 3 positions are being cut in the county – but it's not clear how this will be implemented and therefore who will be afftected.

IMPACT has welcomed a national increase overall in the number of positions available.

However spokersperson Niall Shanahan says families should have been given the information much sooner.

While the Special Needs Parents Association says the timing of the announcement is a 'logistical nightmare'.

Policy officer and Mid West representative Eleanor McSharry says a reduction of 3 positions could affect many more – however she says the lack of clarity is what is driving fears amongst parents.
