Clare Disability Campaigners Welcome Court Car Parking Ruling

A decision by a Clare Judge to impose driving bans on two people for parking in disabled spaces is being welcomed by campaigners in Clare.

Spokespeople for Disabled people of Clare and the Centre for Independent living both say they hope other judges continue in this crackdown.

Judge Patrick Durcan has accused a teenager of "arrogance, ignorance, selfishness and total disregard for others"  after he parked across two disabled spaces in Ennis.

18-year-old John McNamara of O'Donoghue Avenue, Janesboro, Limerick has been banned from driving until the end of the year, and fined 500 euro, as he pleaded guilty to parking in the disabled zone at the town's Parnell Street car park on January 4 last.

Separately Judge Durcan had imposed a separate five-month driving ban on an Ennis woman who was not in court, but had also parked in a disabled spot.

Tom King Director of the Centre for Independent Living says people with disabilities deserve respect and their lobbying on parking spaces and the use of them will continue.
