Lahinch GP Accuses Health Minister of Playing Politics with Over 70s Cards

There's increasing speculation that the Cabinet reshuffle may be announced tomorrow.

Government TDs have been told that they must be present for votes tomorrow.

Votes would have to be held on the appointment of a new Cabinet.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tánaiste Joan Burton are expected to hold more talks later this afternoon, though it's already been confirmed that both have agreed to introduce a plan allowing everyone over the age of seventy to visit GPs for free.

However, one North Clare GP, who is a senior figure within the Irish Medical Organisation, has described this as electoral cycle politics.

The plan to introduce free GP cards for everyone over the age of seventy was agreed by the Taoiseach and Tanaiste, as part of their talks on the future of the government.

It was confirmed in the Dáil by Enda Kenny yesterday.

However, details about the government's plan remain unclear, and concern is being raised by one local GP that the coalition isn't following the best course of action.

Lahinch-based Dr. Michael Kelleher is a member of the IMO GP Committee.

GPs have already criticised plans to introduce free GP cards for under 6s, and talks with doctors about this have yet to begin.

Doctors say they are under-resourced and Dr. Michael Kelleher believes this is an issue that needs to be addressed before they're able to row behind the government's plans.
