Clare TDs Disappointed at Level of Job Creation

Two of Clare's government TDs have expressed disappointment after Clare was found to have fared badly in terms of job creation last year.

A key state agency says it's clients created less jobs in the Mid-West last year than in any other region in Ireland.

Enterprise Ireland companies created 756 new full-time positions last year, but when losses are taken into account the net gain was only 127.

Both of these figures are the lowest of any region in Ireland, while the number of net jobs fell by 89 when compared with the previous year.

Enterprise Ireland, says the figures are cyclical , and insists there is no reason for Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary to fall behind.

The report has prompted calls for more action from two Clare government TDs, however, who say they're disappointed.

Deputy Pat Breen of Fine Gael says he's hopeful the passing of legislation for Shannon Airport will bring more projects to fruition, while he also believes last week's reshuffle will see a stronger case made for the region.

While Clare's Labour TD, Michael McNamara, is hopeful the changes in government will see more indigenous firms given assistance.
