Clare County Council has released figures suggesting that over 70% of homes in Kilkee are unoccupied.
The statistics, based on the census of 2011, show that nearly 1200 of the 1,674 homes in the town were empty on the night of the census in April of that year.

Elsewhere in the West Clare electoral area, over half of all homes were also vacant in Kilfearagh, Liscannor, Querrin and Ballysteen.
30% of Clare homes were unoccupied on the night of the census three years ago, with the vacancy rate higher than this in the West of the county (36.4%).
The national average of unoccupied homes was 17%.
